How Sen. Feinstein is Sabotaging Biden’s Agenda by Refusing to Resign: A Vantage Point
Sen. Feinstein Faces Calls to Retire Early Amid Shingles Battle
Hello, dear readers of Vantage Point! Its DrEagleTalon Your 34th favorite activist and fighter for social justice. Welcome to another edition of my newsletter, where I bring you fun analysis, observations and summaries of each story that caught my eye. While Notes has been taking more of my time than I care to admit, a story has been unfolding. Do I have a juicy one for you: the saga of Senator Dianne Feinstein and her mysterious disappearance from the Senate.1
You may remember Feinstein as the 89-year-old Democrat from California who has been in the Senate since 1992. She is also a member of the Judiciary Committee, which is responsible for confirming President Biden's judicial nominees. You know, those people who will decide the fate of our rights and freedoms for decades to come.
Well, it turns out that Feinstein has been out of Washington since early March, when she announced that she had been hospitalized with shingles. She said she was released from the hospital days later, but she has not returned to the Senate since then. She also announced in February that she would retire from the Senate at the end of 2024, which means she still has three more years to go.
Now, you may be wondering: what's the big deal? She's old, she's sick, she deserves some rest. Well, here's the problem: her absence has stalled the confirmation of Biden's judicial nominees, which in February was on a historic pace, because she still holds her seat on the Judiciary Committee. That means that every time there is a vote on a nominee, she is either absent or votes by proxy, which gives more power to the Republicans who are eager to block Biden's agenda.
This is not only frustrating for Biden and his supporters, but also for millions of Americans who are waiting for justice on issues like abortion rights, voting rights, health care, immigration, climate change and more. These are not trivial matters; these are life-and-death issues that affect us all.
And what is Feinstein doing while all this is happening? Well, according to her statement on Wednesday, she is asking Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to temporarily replace her on the Judiciary Committee until she recovers. She also said she intends to return as soon as possible once her medical team advises that it's safe for her to travel.
But here's the kicker: she did not say when that would be. She did not give any timeline or any indication of how serious her condition is. She did not even apologize for her prolonged absence or acknowledge how it has affected the Senate and the country. She just asked for a replacement and said she will be back someday.
That's not good enough, folks. That's not how you serve your constituents or your country. That's how you cling to power and privilege at the expense of everyone else. That's how you show disrespect and disregard for democracy and justice. That's how you prove that you are part of the problem, not the solution.
That's why two House Democrats from California, Ro Khanna and Dean Phillips, called on Feinstein to resign on Wednesday. They said that while they respect her lifetime of public service, it is obvious that she can no longer fulfill her duties and that staying in the Senate is a dereliction of duty.
I agree with them. And I think you should too. Because this is not about Feinstein as a person; this is about Feinstein as a senator. And as a senator, she has a responsibility to do her job or step aside. She has a responsibility to represent her state and her party. She has a responsibility to uphold the Constitution and protect our rights.
She is failing at all of these things. And by failing at these things, she is letting us down. She is letting down California, which deserves better representation in the Senate. She is letting down Democrats, who need every vote they can get in a 50-50 chamber. She is letting down Americans, who need judges who will defend their interests and values.
She is letting down herself, too. Because by staying in the Senate while being unable to do her job, she is tarnishing her legacy and reputation. She is losing respect and credibility among her colleagues and constituents. She is becoming a liability and an embarrassment for her party and her country.
She should resign now. Not tomorrow, not next week, not next month. Now. Because every day she stays in the Senate is another day wasted for the working class everywhere.

Stuff like this makes me think prominent Democrats are more concerned with their own personal gain than actually helping their constituents. Obviously, Feinstein is too old to serve. Anyone over 70 should be ushered out of the party in favor of younger politicians, but they won't set that precedent as they don't want it used against themselves.
this is absolutely standard behavior for democrats and is exasperating. RGB is now an archetype. These people were always only in it for themselves and any rhetoric about helping people was always a lie, even if it was a lie they tell themselves. Biden himself should resign, he's way too senile to be competent. They just don't care.
